Artist Statement: The overarching meaning in all my series refer to a feeling that life is intrinsically connected and beyond human comprehension. That inspiration drives all my work, especially here in the high desert. I have always loved the New Mexico license plates that declare it to be ‘the land of enchantment’. Enchantment permeates this land of timeless visions and vistas.
My current series, “This Enchanting Land” evolved from a fascination with those mysterious energies driving the imagination - where they come from? - how do they connect us? - where do they lay dormant waiting to be recognized?- how do they give rise to emotion and stimulate new ideas?
Inspired by the high desert of New Mexico, this work offers a vision of flora, fauna and charming adobe structures coming alive through texture, collage and montage. This series presents more questions than answers.
Where do our dreams go when we send them to the winds? Are they carried by wild horses across the New Mexico landscape? Do the energies of those horses contain the location of the lost lines of my love poems? Why does my heart beat in rhythm to the thumping of the jackrabbits as they create timeless drumbeats?
​When I paint, I am allowing color and abstract shapes to become a doorway allowing entry into an experience that feels like this land.
