PAINTINGS CELEBRATING THE HISPANIC SOUTHWEST
Artist's Statement: I am a figurative painter with family roots in New Mexico and Mexico. Much of my art depicts the Hispanic people and landscapes of the Southwest. My interest is in creating artwork that expresses the human spirit and celebrates the beauty of Nature. I have followed this path of exploration as a professional fine artist for forty years.
My paintings form a body of art that is connected and unified by cultural subject matter and color. They are in many private collections and in public collections including the Millicent Rogers Museum, Taos; Harwood Museum of Art, Taos; New Mexico Museum of Art, Santa Fe; Albuquerque Museum; the National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum and the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque.
In 2004 a new public elementary school was named for me honoring my contributions to fine art and Southwest culture.

Oils and Watercolor Paintings
My oils and watercolor paintings are inspired by a spiritual sense of 'home', a search for quiet respite and reflection, defined by the house we live in or the land around us. Connecting with our surroundings provides both a simple pleasure and a vital purpose to our existence. My landscape paintings tend to focus on the immediate and perhaps often overlooked details in nature, as do my architectural studies. I am also intrigued by the history of the front porches of the past, and the way in which people incorporate them as a welcoming space to their homes. These snapshots of daily life are set like a stage with the changing effects of light from season to season, and the rich play of colors that harmonize to define a personal and very intimate space.
I have been working with ceramics for several years, throwing on the wheel, handbuilding, and combining the two. However, I have recently become energized by the making of Raku clocks. I love to take the extreme order of a clock face, surround it with chaos, and yield it to the unpredictability of the Raku firing process. The “chaos” is made from orderly geometric shapes such as circles, lines, triangles, and coupled with irregular shapes and textures.
The Raku firing introduces metallic flash areas and color variations that are all colors of the rainbow. I am always excited to see what the final work will look like. Certainly, no two are the same and I like that.

My greatest joy is to reflect the beauty around me...
Growing up in New Mexico, Heath has always been fascinated by the blending of ancient cultures here. In addition, the future has always beckoned brightly to her through images from NASA’s deep space telescopes. Now, with the next chapter of private space exploration developing rapidly, Heath has been inspired to create a new type of art called “Fusionism” or “Fusionist Art”. Fusionism is a new art movement that blurs the lines among different cultures, fuses old and new painting media, and mixes human versus robotic-generated work. It is a perfect blend of her technical skills with ancient techniques and ideas. I am inspired by ancient native cultures, digital images from NASA's Hubble space telescope, and the opening of Spaceport America in New Mexico.

“Nature is a window to a presence much larger than we are.
Nature and light teach us about impermanence.
My art points to being mindful of our ever changing
experience of the beauty that can be found in life."

"I am a Skywatcher. I have been a Skywatcher as long as I can remember.
Big skies over the desert, approaching weather,
defined by the size and shapes of clouds."

I first learned to weave on one of those square red metal looms, turning out potholders in the summer of my 8th year. Then, I really learned to weave while attending Northern Illinois University (Bachelor of Arts degree). Then, I REALLY learned to weave at the Webschule Sindelfingen
(a weaving trade school in Germany). All the while, I’ve been weaving, and teaching weaving,
and exploring the world of possibilities that textile arts present.

My aesthetic is based on nature’s small wonders, flowers, leaves, and fruit as well as the female form. I appreciate soft, sensual forms that have an interplay of curves and movement.
I create with solid wood for its intrinsic value, virility, and rapidity of execution. The grain and beauty of the wood have little influence in the initial design conception. I visualize a new work in matte black and believe that if a piece has a presence draped in black, then the design will carry the heart and soul, and only then the wood’s beauty will manifest the personality.

"After working with several different mediums for many years, I discovered encaustic techniques and the beeswax medium in 1994 which became a new beginning for my work. The opportunity to experiment with, and redevelop a unique, ancient technique fulfilled my interest in the historical aspects of art, which led to a long journey of discovery. Since that time, I have painted using only beeswax as a medium because the medium and technique provided me the freedom to express my perceptions of the surrealistic aspects of life and nature. My hope is that my work conveys to the viewer the mystical aspects of this medium."
