I grew up in West Africa and India and wanted to be an archaeologist. Instead I've been a screenwriter, a film editor, a singer, and a drama teacher. These days when I'm not taking pictures (in NM or in India) I write novels and travel memoir, and translate old French popular fiction. My new photo book, “HOODOO BADLANDS: New Mexico’s Chaco Wash Landscape—the Bisti and Beyond," is available on my website.

Description of work: I use a variety of techniques to explore the natural asymmetry that exists in both nature and in geometric design. I work in sterling silver and 14/18 karat gold, and I integrate forging, piercing, sinking, chasing, rolling, and overlay work in metal with hand carved/cast forms. Once designs and special pieces are fabricated, then they are highlighted with surface patina to accent the mixed metals and textures in each piece. Finally, they are set with colored gemstones and one-of-a-kind cabochons.

I Iove to weave. I am a handweaver of artwear, living and working in the high desert plateau country of Galisteo, New Mexico. I weave primarily with rayon chenille and cotton yarns occasionally adding other luxurious fiber accents. Additionally, I weave an animal fiber look alike fabric. On my standard rayon chenille and cotton warp, I weave with a micro fiber yarn, called Cloud. These are garments crafted to suit a wide range of environments. I'm always thinking about the next great piece!

"There is a deeply soothing quality about the organic wool and botanical inks I work with.
My hands intuitively understand this, and through the weaving process, seek to reveal a calming presence, similar to soft paintbrush strokes on canvas.” --Cheryl Ruth Janis

"Handmade jewelry reflects the unique person you are.
My custom jewelry designs are created JUST FOR YOU and no two pieces are alike."
My custom jewelry designs are created JUST FOR YOU and no two pieces are alike."
I’m originally from the east coast and I grew up visiting craft centers in the Virginia and West Virginia mountains. I was entranced with the jewelry and art I saw. I always loved working with my hands and I really enjoy the process of designing and creating jewelry.
I moved to New Mexico because this part of the country is the most deeply inspiring place I’ve ever been. I love the colors in the landscape and the every changing clouds in the sky. I want my jewelry to communicate my excitement and enthusiasm for New Mexico.
I work primarily in silver - sometimes in copper. I make the components of my pieces by hand to create the overall design. Texture is a fundamental part of many of my designs and I incorporate patterns and shapes from nature in many of my pieces.
My formal education is in chemistry. I didn’t become really involved in making jewelry until I was out of college and working. I started with some silver smithing classes and since then I’ve pursued a continuing course of jewelry related classes.

Deborah Klezmer Designs is my Santa Fe based design and fabrication studio. I work with precious metals, including gold and silver, as well as diamonds and other natural gemstones. My work pays homage to the idea that everything we've made owes a debt to nature. In my jewelry, leaves scatter around gears and balance wheels; vines grow across rows of books. Combining traditional metalsmithing techniques with an assemblage artist's fascination with found objects, I'm a fine jeweler who likes to upcycle.
My studio produces both limited-edition jewelry as well as one of a kind pieces. Please contact me with inquires.

In my art I hope to capture the natural beauty that captivates so many people who either visit or live in the Southwest, especially in New Mexico. Through watercolor and encaustic painting, I express the “magic” that I see in the landscapes, skies and culture of the Southwest. Depending on how the creative spirit moves me, I may choose to paint in a style that is loose but realistic, representational or abstract. Regardless of the subject or style, my intention remains the same… to have the viewer connect with the Southwest’s diverse beauty.
