Joel Armstrong (1956–2025) was a Silver City, New Mexico–based artist who grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas. Fine art was an integral part of his life from an early age. After more than twenty years as an illustrator and art director, Joel pursued his passion for drawing in greater depth, earning his MFA in Drawing from Colorado State University in 2001.
In 2021, Joel turned his focus to colored pencil drawings, exploring the beauty of flowers, clouds, and figurative subjects. His artistic repertoire also included mixed media, wire drawing, installation art, graphic design, and assemblage.
For 14 years, Joel taught illustration, drawing, and graphic design at John Brown University, where he inspired students with his skill and creativity. Though versatile across many mediums, he was particularly acclaimed for his mastery of colored pencils, wire drawing, installation, collage, and mixed media.
In May 2022, Joel’s work and artistic vision were featured in Colored Pencil Magazine.

This site will give you a glimpse of how I work, where I work, and what I try to communicate as a contemporary figurative artist. I begin by drawing from life. It gives me the ability to focus on movement within a figure rather than on detail. The gesture of any figure, animal or human, expresses emotion through its action. Hopefully, the viewer will empathize with the gesture and the emotion expressed through it.

Karen’s approach to image making explores the blending of photosensitive materials, digital media, and printmaking. She is fascinated with how the passage of time affects the human body and other natural elements in the world.

These three sculptures "Birth of a Legend," "Birth of a Legend II," and "Birth of a Legend III" are my three most recent works in bronze. The sculptures are inspired by and based on sculptures I did forty years ago, "Horus" and "Horus of the Upper Kingdom." The sculptures were created by placing a tetrahedron within and connected to a convexly curved octahedron (which in one created a sphere and in the other an egg). In each, the sides of the tetrahedron were extended outwardly so two sides would go beyond the walls of the curved form while the other two connected the two forms. The results were flower/bird-like forms with a hint of the hawk-like Egyptian god. Looking at those two earlier works, I decided to re-visit the idea of again placing the tetrahedron within the egg-like octahedron, but making the extensions more. suggestive of wings and neck of a bird of pray. (Now only one side extends and attaches to part of the octahedron.) Of course the idea of the birth exists from the bird form breaking free of the octahedral egg. A lifetime of following nature’s path. The shapes and colors layering the surfaces of my art. Those collected objects from the earth, dried plant life and irresistible sticks and stones are replicated and abstracted in the natural bees wax medium. The continuing dialog, the process of translating my story into these materials fills my soul. It does not let me rest, this life spent in our tenuous environment drawing it in and pouring it out in my studio.

Trained as a figurative painter/printmaker, Louise Sackett approaches all her work from a painter’s point of view. Light and composition take center stage. Her preferred style is impressionist realism, with the punctuation of personal statements with the brush, pencil or stick. In this day of instant photos and digital art, Louise finds the mark of the artist to be more important than ever. Therefore, each of her creations celebrates rather than hides obvious brush and pencil strokes. The immediacy of the visible artist’s touch is as important to her as is the style.
