Dianna Shomaker Artist Statement: Welcome to my art world. I invite you to become acquainted with my work and what it means to me, and further your appreciation for the abstract art that has evolved in tandem with my life. Not all my work is abstract, as is also true of other artists, but I’m basically an intuitive soul. I love a good puzzle. That’s what art is, the unravelling of a puzzle through curiosity, experimentation, and observation. But most importantly to me, it is my intuition that drives what I do.
Now why, you may ask, is that of value for you when viewing my art. Where does it fit in with your impressions? Paintings are powerful tools for my ability to convey, to give me a voice for my inner world. That is the key to unraveling my art. It is as close as I can come to communicating meanings that are too nebulous to put into words.
I bring to the room a very diverse set of experiences throughout my lifetime and my values are based on that. Decisions weren’t always about art but art has always been a driving force. That is also true for the viewer. We are each wonderfully unique to our background. Treasure that uniqueness.
Ultimately, I paint because it beckons me down a pathway of exploration and understanding in this complex world. It is my continuing education. I consider a work successful when abstraction provokes and teases me, and hopefully the viewer, too; when it invites everyone into the unfolding drama on the canvas. Ultimately, I want it to be an enjoyable and enlightening journey for all.

An abstract expressionistic painter living and working in Albuquerque, New Mexico since 1989, Ivana Starcevic was born in Belgrade, Serbia. She long has sought to capture “the spirit of place” in her art, finding inspiration not only in her current surroundings, but also in her fragmented memories of where she grew up. From the age of four, Starcevic knew she wanted to be an artist.
Her paintings are rich in color, verve and motion, whether inspired by landscape, light or New Mexico’s sky.
Starcevic earned an MFA in Mixed Media from the Academy of Applied Arts University in Belgrade and later pursued postgraduate studies in printmaking from the University of New Mexico.
Her current large-scale work, inspired by southwestern hues and views, is usually painted from memory, “guided by intuition and fueled by imagination.” Unafraid of challenges, her style bold, her approach sometimes messy, Starcevic’s curiosity and passion infuse her paintings.
While she did take a break from fine arts to pursue a 20-year career as the Creative Director for a Fortune 500 Company, focused on technology and innovation in custom training and digital communications, throughout Starcevic kept connected to art through her work as both a rescue animal photographer, and a contributor to Getty/iStock.
Now retired from business, Starcevic daily plays with rhythmic layers of vivid acrylics and oils, energetically exploring alternatives on canvas.
Her work, described by one critic as “unshakably cosmopolitan, irreversibly modern and strikingly innovative,” has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and her pieces are in both public and private collections.

Krysteen brings to her oil painting the same free spirited use of color, design and joie de vivre that is her signature of a lifetime. She says, "I see New Mexico and my subjects as bright, full of life and exciting, and that is how I paint them. I am happy to be out in the open spaces and mountains, observing and working to capture the landscape, changing light, clouds, and all manner of subjects."

P.K. Williams, Artist Statement:
When I first began creating art, I started out realistically portraying various subject matter, mainly nature. This soon became tedious, and I felt like I was simply recreating something nature had already created.
I have now changed my methodology. My work has evolved. Instead of recreating that which already exists I enjoy exploring concepts and themes which allow my ideas and curiosity to take precedent over realism. In addition to presenting ideas formed from researching various themes I use experimentation and intuition to create compositions which compliment my thoughts.
Since I use mixed processes, my pieces are a varied collection of techniques including collage, paper staining, printmaking, epoxy resin pouring, painting and my personal favorite, paper excavation. I enjoy combining several of these techniques into one piece and I think that is what makes my work unique.
My philosophy is that if I relate to something; someone else will also relate to it. In a current series I am exploring beginnings; both personal and those of all mankind and our surroundings. In some of my paintings I have put elements which are reminders of my own roots. People are reminded of their own starts in life while looking at mine. We are all connected in one way or another. When I can reach deep down and find these connections, I am successful as an artist.

Painting is something I have a strong need and desire to do. There is something very fulfilling about creating something with your own hands.
Here in New Mexico, the light, the colors and the shapes within the landscape are a never-ending source of inspiration for me. These elements are the perfect excuse for me to paint the way I do. Acrylics have become my medium of choice due to the rich colors, fast drying time and durability. From my own reference photos and sketches, I try to capture in paint the subjects that draw my attention. It could be flowers, a landscape, a time of day or just the way the light touches certain objects. It is my way of saving memories of things that leave me in awe.

Susan is a Corrales, New Mexico-based mixed media artist creating
layered abstractions with acrylic, handmade papers, japanese sumi ink and collage.
layered abstractions with acrylic, handmade papers, japanese sumi ink and collage.
I create layered compositions that evolve from my inner landscape that weaves in and out of my outer world. They are explorations inspired by my lifelong fascination with paper, writing, overlays, manuscripts, calligraphic marks and formal concerns as well as dreams and memories, darkness and light. Translucency allows some layers to be revealed and altered by subsequent layers. Lines evoke time lines, life lines, the rhythm of the breath, heartbeat and the connection of brain and hand through brushstrokes. I am connected to life through a body of emotional and physical experience.
