"I work in my Albuquerque studio as an abstract painter, transforming the sensations of landscape into fields of color, texture, and dynamic gesture. After a forty-year career as an award-winning architect, I shifted fully into painting, bringing with me a deep understanding of spatial balance, structure, and material presence."
The Sun Forgets Slowly
"My paintings reimagine landscape from the inside out. I’m not depicting a specific place; I’m evoking the experience of place—color as temperature, texture as terrain, line as movement. My architectural background remains present but never literal: in faint graphite lines, in the quiet balance of mass and void, in the proportional instincts shaped by decades of designing space. These echoes act not as constraints but as scaffolds for a more intuitive, expressive process. The work embraces a sense of freedom—forms shifting, colliding, dissolving, and recomposing."
Cerulean Energy
Color is central to my practice. While the desert’s earth tones remain a constant thread, I also reach for radiant magentas, electric greens, cobalt blues, and bursts of orange and gold. These hues open a dynamic tension between structure and spontaneity, suggesting landscapes energized by memory rather than geography. My surfaces evolve in layers—scraped, built, washed, or embedded—allowing traces of earlier decisions to remain visible. These tactile histories invite slow looking, gradually revealing their complexity.
Ultimately, I’m not painting the desert itself, but the feeling of standing in it: the warmth, the vastness, the quiet energy of open space. In a world full of visual noise, I hope my work offers grounded clarity and the quiet exhilaration of deep looking—an expression of a lifetime spent refining how I see."

Fused glass explorations using many modalities and multiple firings such as the incorporation of paints, mica, dichroic glass and paper design combinations create artistic and functional ware and jewelry, merging the practical and the whimsical.
Studying with a master teacher is a process of blossoming into the unknown and bringing the magic and mystery of clay into a form that resonates with my soul. I am fully committed to finding the joy of expression in clay as I learn new techniques and delve into the mystery of making. I use low fire and high fire glazes, an electric kiln and am in the process of building a propane kiln and exploring its uses.
As a writer and traveler, I have learned to enjoy the nuances of place, people, relationship and interaction with self and other. As a potter, I am learning to enjoy the same energies that exist within myself and bring them into expression. This is a magical journey into unknown territory that I find thrilling as it guides me into an almost meditative energy that speaks of aspects of my being that I have never before encountered.

Dianna Shomaker Artist Statement: Welcome to my art world. I invite you to become acquainted with my work and what it means to me, and further your appreciation for the abstract art that has evolved in tandem with my life. Not all my work is abstract, as is also true of other artists, but I’m basically an intuitive soul. I love a good puzzle. That’s what art is, the unravelling of a puzzle through curiosity, experimentation, and observation. But most importantly to me, it is my intuition that drives what I do.
Now why, you may ask, is that of value for you when viewing my art. Where does it fit in with your impressions? Paintings are powerful tools for my ability to convey, to give me a voice for my inner world. That is the key to unraveling my art. It is as close as I can come to communicating meanings that are too nebulous to put into words.
I bring to the room a very diverse set of experiences throughout my lifetime and my values are based on that. Decisions weren’t always about art but art has always been a driving force. That is also true for the viewer. We are each wonderfully unique to our background. Treasure that uniqueness.
Ultimately, I paint because it beckons me down a pathway of exploration and understanding in this complex world. It is my continuing education. I consider a work successful when abstraction provokes and teases me, and hopefully the viewer, too; when it invites everyone into the unfolding drama on the canvas. Ultimately, I want it to be an enjoyable and enlightening journey for all.

Krysteen brings to her oil painting the same free spirited use of color, design and joie de vivre that is her signature of a lifetime. She says, "I see New Mexico and my subjects as bright, full of life and exciting, and that is how I paint them. I am happy to be out in the open spaces and mountains, observing and working to capture the landscape, changing light, clouds, and all manner of subjects."

The idea behind my work is to create brand new art from leftovers and ideas. The final piece looks nothing like the fragments from which they emerged. This, for me, is very exciting because it is a challenge to marry several oddments to create a pleasing composition which has been unified into a completely new form. This challenge keeps my desire to create fresh and energized...

Moonlight Dance
I use “bits and pieces” of stained papers, painted papers and prints to create mixed media collages. I incorporate an assortment of media and methods into my work. Some of my favorite mediums include acrylics, graphite, pastels, ink, watercolor, and epoxy resin. Printmaking, no matter which type, is a method I enjoy integrating into my work. Paper excavation is yet another method I appreciate, and it goes without saying that painting, no matter what the medium, is best loved. Including a variety of mediums and methods adds another dimension to my work, additionally allowing me to add my own personal touches. The result is unique and just a bit mysterious.
While I deeply appreciate the technical skill it takes to recreate a representational scene from nature, it is not my personal intention. I am very much inspired by nature and often include an interpretation of various flora and fauna within my art; yet I do not feel the need to reproduce what I see. For me, it is much more satisfying to create something brand new. In doing so I hope to attract the interest of my audience. Once attracted, a variety of details captures their attention and draws them into my work. My hope is that my interpretation allows for people to create their own connections to my work. If I accomplish that, I am successful in my endeavors.

"Painting is something I have a strong need and desire to do. There is something very fulfilling about creating something with your own hands.
Here in New Mexico, the light, the colors and the shapes within the landscape are a never-ending source of inspiration for me. These elements are the perfect excuse for me to paint the way I do. Acrylics have become my medium of choice due to the rich colors, fast drying time and durability. From my own reference photos and sketches, I try to capture in paint the subjects that draw my attention. It could be flowers, a landscape, a time of day or just the way the light touches certain objects. It is my way of saving memories of things that leave me in awe."

I create layered compositions that evolve from my inner landscape that weaves in and out of my outer world. They are explorations inspired by my lifelong fascination with paper, writing, overlays, manuscripts, calligraphic marks and formal concerns as well as dreams and memories, darkness and light. Translucency allows some layers to be revealed and altered by subsequent layers. Lines evoke time lines, life lines, the rhythm of the breath, heartbeat and the connection of brain and hand through brushstrokes. I am connected to life through a body of emotional and physical experience.
