“THIS ENCHANTED JOURNEY” 2025
Artist Statement: The overarching meaning in all my work refers to a feeling that life is intrinsically connected and beyond human comprehension. That inspiration drives me, especially here in the high desert. I have always loved the New Mexico license plates that declare it to be ‘the land of enchantment’. Enchantment permeates this land of timeless visions and vistas.
My current series, “This Enchanted Journey” evolved from a fascination with those mysterious energies driving the imagination - where they come from? - how do they connect us? - where do they lay dormant waiting to be recognized?- how do they give rise to emotion and stimulate new ideas?
Inspired by the high desert of New Mexico, this work offers an enchanted vision of flora and fauna coming alive through texture, lyrical line and color. This series presents more questions than answers.
Where do our dreams go when birdsong sends them to the winds? Are they carried by wild horses across the New Mexico landscape? When I paint, I hope to create a doorway for the imagination.

Darlene Olivia McElroy comes from an old New Mexico family of artists, musicians and inventors. She is a mad scientist of art techniques and is continually exploring new surfaces, materials and techniques.
Throughout her career McElroy has combined head and heart in her journey of creating evocative mixed-media paintings. Trained as a painter and illustrator, she has an obsession for materials, passion for dreamlike imagery, and love of new technologies, which she uses to immerse herself in richly textured surfaces, mixtures of old and new, and brilliant and subdued tones. And always, there is a face or symbol of humanity that serves as a guide into mysterious layers which challenge reason and draw upon emotions.

Artist Statement: I fell in love with the landscape, light and culture of Santa Fe and moved here in 2014. My life’s path had meandered across the country, from the Midwest to both coasts and back again for college and graduate study in science. I eventually settled in the Northeast, where I spent more than three decades immersed in biotech, focused on scientific rigor, abstract theories, and data-driven discovery.
But even while working in that world, I was always creating, using my hands, my intuition, my sense of form. Over the years, I experimented with countless materials: fabric, fiber, paper, clay, paint, and glass, searching for balance between form and feeling, shape and silence, chaos and harmony.
The same curiosity and structure that drew me to science also drives my artmaking. I approach each piece as I would a research question, with a guiding idea, curiosity and a willingness to explore. The process is layered and nonlinear: apply, subtract, build, erase, reimagine. What begins as chaos gradually becomes coherence.
Ultimately, I find that the act of creating is less about inventing something new and more about discovering something essential, something that has been present all along, simply waiting to be seen.

"I create because I am compelled to create."
"My work often expresses emotion, because it is emotion that attracts me to any piece of art. My pieces have a patina as if they have been touched by many hands and if they could talk they would surely have a story to tell…"

"For a number of years now my focus has been on sculptural pieces. It was not until around 2009 that I started feeling like and knowing in my soul that I was an artist. It was while working on these sculptural pieces that I broke free. I work with polymer clay, paper clay, paper mache and whatever else I might pick up. My pieces are very organic both in appearance and the process that brings them to life. I usually start with very vague ideas, like a face and let the clay become what it wants to become. As with my metal work, these sculptural pieces have a patina as if they have been touched by many hands and originated in another place unknown to us."

Cheri's seemingly casual aesthetic shifts emphasis from outrageous and funky to tender and charming. Re-creating child like images with recurring motifs such as dogs, stuffed animals, flowers and religious iconography she attempts to understand her world with finding humor in beauty and the beauty of humor.

"My art is based on photos taken of interesting compositions found in ordinary, daily reality, unmanipulated except for color, although occasionally I experiment with applying bi-lateral symmetry to an image. It's very exciting, being able to create abstract images based directly on everyday reality. All this inspired by 25 years of enjoying an astonishing variety of abstract art in the museums and galleries while living in New York City. I refer to the process as Photo/Painting Alchemy, and the resulting body of work as Imaginarium. Preferring not to repeat myself, each piece should be a new visual adventure."

After experimenting with oil and acrylic, I found my true affinity is with transparent watercolor. I love its spontaneity, its freedom of flow, the surprises, and the challenge to master or at least control the independence of its gentle yet willful nature. I do still lifes now and then, but I am particularly attracted to landscapes. Color and light are the elements that most strike my sensuous core. Watercolor seems to best capture for me the vibrancy and translucence of sky, earth, water and all that grows and travels therein. I may know where I want to go, but how to get there is always an adventure.
As an artist, what interests me most is portraying relationships through the essence of the moment.... I work predominately on a grand scale in a vibrant, colorful manner with loose sweeping brushwork in acrylic on canvas.

I paint exotic landscapes - my versions of heaven - shimmering with gold leaf and other reflective materials, to create places that are beautiful and meditative not found on earth. If you're up for a creative experience, please contact me to arrange a custom commission painting for your home or office. I also provide painting classes, books and instructional videos that include my unique systems and methods for teaching contemporary painting techniques.

In the very noisy, chaotic, cacophony of our visible/audible world aloud with swirling voices and conflicting diatribes, I have found myself continuing to be fascinated with the more subtle nuances of human expression, gesture, movement, moment, action, interaction, and reaction which offer to me a sense of wonderment.
