The colors of the Southwest have influenced my painting a great deal. There is no other blue as the blue of the New Mexico Sky, or the wild colors that we see in our sunsets. The colors and mountains of New Mexico have influenced my painting style for many years. I believe this comes from having to live away from them for several years in a wet and dreary climate, and getting to return to my native state.

Colorful Ceramic Fantasies & Mythical Muses
"My work is inspired by dream, myth, and story. After studying mythology with an emphasis in depth psychology, my sculpture and functional pots deal with the struggles and the joys in living a mindful, productive, and satisfying life. For me the ceramic art-making process is a soul-making process that the pieces reflect. The work proceeds, tumbling and dancing, while honoring the messages from the unconscious through interpretation and active imagination".....Susan

Having given up the need to control my work, I’ve found my center and learned the satisfaction of letting paint be paint. I’m simply the conduit for these colors that play and trick the eye, with their shy or bold personalities revealing themselves or not, depending on the light—their mischievous accomplice.
The ultimate goal of my artistic practice is to achieve balance; a balance in the process between control and letting go, a balance esthetically between the simple and the complex, and balance conceptually between the familiar and the enigmatic.

"I approach painting as an observer of the soul, enlightening the viewer about the presence, wonder, and dignity of nature and life. I want the viewer to value place and person in a space of spirit and heart and bring this illumination into their personal environments."

Honored as a Local Treasure by the Albuquerque Arts Business Association, Carla obtained her Bachelor in studio art from State University of New York, Master of Science in Teaching Visual Arts from Rochester Institute of Technology, and Doctorate in Organizational Learning and Instructional Technologies from the University of New Mexico. WESTERN INTERPRETATIONS OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE PAINTING TECHNIQUES
What is Splash Color? The foundation of this method of painting can be found in principles originating in the Tan Dynasty of China with a technique known as Po Mo. Po Mo is a traditional approach to Chinese painting, but Splash Ink with Watercolor pushes it into a whole new realm. Splash Ink painting is called splash ink because the artist splashes, throws, or pours black ink and the three primary watercolors or liquid acrylic onto the layers of rice paper or watercolor paper in order to create intended and unintended effects in abstract forms and colors.
