The colors of the Southwest have influenced my painting a great deal. There is no other blue as the blue of the New Mexico Sky, or the wild colors that we see in our sunsets. The colors and mountains of New Mexico have influenced my painting style for many years. I believe this comes from having to live away from them for several years in a wet and dreary climate, and getting to return to my native state.

Having given up the need to control my work, I’ve found my center and learned the satisfaction of letting paint be paint. I’m simply the conduit for these colors that play and trick the eye, with their shy or bold personalities revealing themselves or not, depending on the light—their mischievous accomplice.
The ultimate goal of my artistic practice is to achieve balance; a balance in the process between
control and letting go, a balance esthetically between the simple and the complex, and balance
conceptually between the familiar and the enigmatic.

She has collections of western maps and stamps, abstract expressionism, multi-media collages, and New Mexico landscapes.

Barbara Elrica Cloud was born in the caribbean on the island St. Lucia and raised on St. Croix in the U. S. Virgin Islands. As a fluid acrylic artist, she makes her home in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
There has always been color in Barb’s life; the skies, beaches, foliage and desert; clothing, homes and even rooftops; all brighten her day with color energy; much of these colors are reflected in her pieces. She is a raw artist, taking inspiration from her daily experiences.

The intricacies of nature serve as the inspiration for my work. Whether my aim is to create a detailed piece with drawing media, like ink or graphite, or whether I’m working on loose and abstract work with paints and mixed media, nature is at the heart of the concept. The forms and lines that are the foundation of every aspect of nature, the curves and spirals of shells and flowers, the hexagon in bee hives, the textures, colors and variety of species fascinate my creative mind.

Artist Statement: Art is the creative journey which leads her exploration into painting and experimenting with color and materials. Explorations allow for her inner child to play with mark making and layers of paint add history to her work. Her love of Oriental brush painting has been an influence and fuels her practice of utilizing mixed media, integrating collage elements into the works. East meets West as she integrates these influences with her passion for abstract expressionism - joining the exacting, methodical style of one, with the free, spontaneous flow of the other. Oriental influences are a natural pairing with my love of nature.
Recently she discovered her love for encaustic collage. Encaustic is the perfect vehicle for marrying paper with wax. Through papers and wax her stories emerge about the relationships between people, creatures and things.

I paint mainly in oils, primarily landscapes, but I also enjoy non-representational work. My love of quilts shows up in my geometric painting series, which I drafted using a quilt design software. My goal is always to paint honestly, and to channel the joy I feel while painting. I want my paintings to sing to me, which is when I know that I like them enough to have them seen publically.

WESTERN INTERPRETATIONS OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE PAINTING TECHNIQUES
NEW ADDITIONS
What is Splash Color? The foundation of this method of painting can be found in principles originating in the Tan Dynasty of China with a technique known as Po Mo. Po Mo is a traditional approach to Chinese painting, but Splash Ink with Watercolor pushes it into a whole new realm. Splash Ink painting is called splash ink because the artist splashes, throws, or pours black ink and the three primary watercolors or liquid acrylic onto the layers of rice paper or watercolor paper in order to create intended and unintended effects in abstract forms and colors.
