"We are more divorced from the natural world than at any time in our species’ history; the average American spends 93% of their time indoors. I think we need the tonic of wildness; that it feeds something important in us. I hope that my paintings work as a lighthouse to feel that energy from our houses and cities. I make paintings of the wilderness and in cities and little towns before dawn that bring to life that awe-filled mystery of being alive on this planet."

Keeton studied painting and theater, and worked as a schoolteacher, a waiter and actor and then spent thirty years as a pioneer in digital visual effects for television, films and commercials, before returning to his first love, painting landscapes and nocturnes. He lives in Santa Fe, with his wife Melinda Tidwell, three dogs and a cat. Jonathan is a 2019 Fellow in the Clark Hulings Fund's Art Business Accelerator.​
