Whether my aim is to create a detailed piece with drawing media, like ink or graphite, or whether I’m working on loose and abstract work with paints and mixed media, nature is at the heart of the concept. The forms and lines that are the foundation of every aspect of nature, the curves and spirals of shells and flowers, the hexagon in bee hives, the textures, colors and variety of species fascinate my creative mind. I welcome commission requests. Should you have an idea or want me to create something special for you or a loved one, please reach out to me. Www.CeliaCortez.com New Mexico artists are amazing! Tucked into the picturesque high desert hills of New Mexico, is the old village of El Rito, a centuries old community—one of the first places the Spanish settled in northern New Mexico captivated by the landscape and the light which still beckons. El Rito is home to Northern New Mexico College, any number of artists – famous and infamous, and rich cultural traditions honored in Spanish and English. If you’re lucky, you will find photographer, David Michael Kennedy at home in his historic adobe compound. Since the 1970s Kennedy has moved back and forth between New York and New Mexico which a two-and-a-half-year hiatus in a 1960’s airstream “on the road,” photographing the lands and the people he met on his journey with a 4 x 5 camera using Polaroid positive/negative film. Since 2008 Kennedy has made El Rito his home base. The Kennedy compound has morphed over the years since the artist moved in; what is constant is the darkroom where the magician casts his spells in platinum and palladium – precious metals at his command. Kennedy is well-known for his mastery of the process creating haunting portraits and evocative landscapes. Fittingly, as Kennedy is a wizened and kind old soul with an irrelevantly bawdy sense of humor coupled with a deep respect for the world in front of his camera, platinum and palladium processes were popular in the late 19th century; characterized by an extensive range in values and soft, grey tones. The magic happens when Kennedy manipulates the color both in developing and toning his final prints. David Michael Kennedy has been making portraits of people for nearly 50 years. Whether of the famous or the obscure, he has the uncanny ability of get his collaborators to reveal a touch of their vulnerability, their humanity – no matter how many layers of resistance their experiences had added to their public personas. Again – that old magic and a gentle touch. Scroll through the portraits on this website – you’ll find memories and magic and more, the importance, especially now, of opening your doors and your heart to whoever knocks. Kennedy’s story unfolds as you explore this website and read his blog revealing who has sat in front of his camera over the years, the lands he has traversed, who exhibits and collects his artwork, what workshop he offers, where you can purchase his prints. All the details behind the magic – which is really just passion and hard work – a commitment to the inner eye. Mary Anne Redding Curator, Fellow Traveler New Mexico artists are amazing! Her pastel pigments fully saturate the entire surface, and are worked and blended in with an almost sculptural quality. Christina Hall-Strauss Acrylic on Canvas VISIT ARTIST'S WEBSITE VISIT CHRISTINA'S INSTAGRAM PAGE FOLLOW CHRISTINA'S FACEBOOK PAGE ARTIST STATEMENT: My artwork explores the rhythms, tensions and harmonies of the natural world, reflecting my sensory perception of patterns, energies, atmospheres and relationships. I work with the interplay of color and movement, form and texture, and the idea of above and below, seen and unseen, with multiple layering in my paintings. I work with negative space by adding and subtracting shapes while building the surface to create an overall glow. The Southwestern landscape permeates my awareness of color and shape. The cycling of the New Mexico seasons, flights of birds, native flora, the Río Grande and other rivers and arroyos, continually visit my paintings. Travel intensifies my appreciation of the many forms and feelings in the world of nature. Asian aesthetics in crafts and painting also continue to be a great influence. My preferred mediums are acrylic and graphite on canvas and on gessoed paper. I was born in Tucson, Arizona in 1947, and have lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico, since the mid-1970s. I graduated from the University of Arizona in 1970 with a BFA in Painting and a minor in Art History. I taught watercolor and drawing at the Tucson Museum of Art School from 1971 to 1976 and headed the Art Program at the New School of Santa Fe from 1976 to 1980. I’ve exhibited nationally and internationally since 1971, and have shown in many galleries. I have had many one-person exhibitions and have been in countless group exhibitions. My work is in many public collections: the permanent collection of the Capitol Arts Foundation in the New Mexico State Capitol building (Santa Fe), the Santa Fe Community College Foundation, Lovelace Health Centers in New Mexico, as well as others. New Mexico Arts has purchased my work several times, twice with the Purchase Initiative and once with the Acclaimed Artist Initiative. My work has been featured in many publications — Studio Visit magazine, the Albuquerque Journal, The New Mexican’s Pasatiempo, THE magazine, American Art Collector, Vasari 21, as well as others. The Film Department of the Santa Fe Community College produced a video of me and my work in connection with their permanent collection. I continue to work daily in my studio in Santa Fe. In 1949, he moved to Cedar Hill, New Mexico. His parents owned a general store and small farm. He began drawing as a youth and continued his interest in art during high school. In 1964, the family moved back to Santa Paula where they lived a few years before his parents returned to New Mexico. During his senior year at Santa Paula High School, he concentrated on his art and won awards in advanced oils and watercolors. In 2007, after retiring from a long and successful career in the financial sector of a major engineering and construction company, he returned to his art specializing in oil painting while taking advanced art classes at San Juan College in Farmington, New Mexico. He credits his art instructor, Professor William V. Hatch, for inspiring him to renew his interest in art. His first body of work that he calls the “Mountain Series” depicts dramatic landscapes found in the San Juan Mountains of Southwestern Colorado where he enjoyed hunting and fishing as a boy. The results are beautiful scenic works of art that illustrate his unique style and skill with color and composition. In addition to his main body of work, he has completed a series of small paintings that he calls “Floral Designs” and recently began a new series called “Canyonlands” featuring high desert scenes of the Southwest. He also paints other scenes of interest, including dramatic and colorful skyscapes. Curt and his wife Susan reside in Flora Vista, New Mexico. New Mexico artists are amazing! VISIT ARTIST'S WEBSITE EMAIL KARLA FOLLOW KARLA HACKMAN DESIGNS ON FACEBOOK ![]() Description of work: My current work is sculptural and organic, exploring the tension between order and entropy that exists in nature and design. I am drawn to nature’s organic forms (branches, buds, and floral elements) and old-world architectural structures and contemporary geometric forms: arches, triangles, circles and rectangles. I use these forms and elements to create my designs. I integrate forging, piercing, sinking, chasing, rolling, and overlaying of metal with cast organic and hand-carved/cast forms in sterling and fine silver with 14/18/22K gold and gems. These designs are textured and highlighted with hand-created surfaces, patina, and/or 24 karat gold using a Korean gilding technique called Keum Boo, creating high contrast with the mixing of metals. My newest collection, Pandemonium, explores the notion of geometric, sculptural forms captured, moving, and balancing within space, and how far the forms and patterns can be pushed, creating equilibrium while also ensuring beauty. Lyn Orona, Oil Painter Impressionistic Southwest Scenes VISIT ARTIST'S WEBSITE Follow Lyn's Facebook Page "I started in the arts as early as 1969 as a portrait artist and clay sculpture. I have owned businesses thru the years and have been in many juried fine art and International shows throughout New Mexico, Nevada, Texas, Arizona and California. I am mostly self taught, but also have taken courses with the Columbus art and Design of Ohio and Foothill College in California. While living in another state, I painted the legendry figures of the Old West, capturing the essence of the outlaws, like Billy the Kid, Wyatt Earp, who lived so large in our history. After moving to New Mexico, the history and stories of everyday life, colorful cultures of Native American and Mexican people took hold of my brush. My style of art had finally found the right home." Having grown up in an area rich in Native American history, I have been intrigued by Native American culture since childhood and marvel in their spirituality and wisdom. I earned my BA degree in Advertising Design from Iowa State University. Although mostly self-taught, I have attended a few classes and sculpture workshops. I am a member of the National Sculpture Society, and my work has appeared in juried shows from Wyoming to Illinois." Featuring: Santa Fe Artist, Artist, JP Walker, Impressionistic Painter - Acrylic on Canvas.2/11/2025 Artist Statement: I am a painter who is inspired by the world around me, including the places I have traveled and explored. I want to share those experiences in my work as I continue the artistic journey and find new inspiration from the places, and people that surround me. My paintings celebrate color, texture and a physical connection to the nature that each artwork represents. My goal is to create a sense of depth in each painting using thick, expressive, paint strokes, shadow and light. I work primarily in acrylic on canvas, building in layers and texture in a technique that usually is more representational of oil based work. My hope is the dimensional approach of building my painting on the canvas will help connect you as the viewer, draw you in, and create a relationship with the Impressionistic / Open Impressionistic style of the artwork.
