I appreciate soft, sensual forms that have an interplay of curves and movement. I create with solid wood for its intrinsic value, virility, and rapidity of execution. The grain and beauty of the wood have little influence in the initial design conception. I visualize a new work in matte black and believe that if a piece has a presence draped in black, then the design will carry the heart and soul, and only then the wood’s beauty will manifest the personality." "Nature has always been a significant part of my life, especially leaves and fruits. I grew up in rural Ohio, where we had a small orchard, and from an early age, it was my responsibility to take care of it. I spent my childhood and teenage years pruning, picking, and forever raking. I remember waking up every morning and seeing the pear tree outside my bedroom window. The green hues of the leaves would change depending on the weather, and I found the rustling of the leaves to be one of the most beautiful sounds then and now. Today, leaves, flowers, and fruits play a dominant role in my work. I find them to be not only beautiful but also significant. The leaves, with their varying colors and shapes, represent nature's come-hither glance. The apples, with their bounty, represent new birth. Finally, the flowers are nature's laughter with their colors and fragrances." New Mexico artists are amazing! Discover New Mexico’s Art Treasures & support the people who create them.

Leaving New York and commercial photography in 1986 David Michael Kennedy moved to New Mexico and began to focus on his fine art photography. "Kennedy has been most often compared to photographers Edward Sheriff Curtis and William Henry Jackson. Both Curtis and Jackson are among the most well known artists who fueled the romantic myth of the American West of the imagination by championing the land in its unspoiled state. Kennedy subscribes firmly to their tradition. His landscapes are effectively devoid of human life. Even in those images where there are remnants of human intervention on the land: a road, a solitary church, a seemingly abandoned graveyard, silhouetted teepees, only ghosts haunt the images, no people from any tribe remain. The images are archival, each is unique and shows the hand of the artist as he lovingly hand prints them in palladium or platinum/palladium, nineteenth century photographic processes that reinforce the lonely beauty of the landscapes by obscuring air pollution and the detritus of human existence littering the landscape. Using palladium aligns the photographer firmly with a nineteenth century sensibility. Kennedy’s landscapes document his presence at sites long held sacred to all peoples, the photographs record a moment of sublime enjoyment at the majesty of Shiprock or Monument Valley. Taken as a whole, they are a celebration of our shared interest in the natural wonders of the West." Mary Anne Redding, Curator of Photography, Palace of the Governors/New Mexico History Museum David's impressive and vast body of work includes iconic portraits of musicians, actors and artists. Visitors often find themselves stumbling onto recognizable pictures of Bob Dylan, Debbie Harry or Willie Nelson –pictures that they have known well and for years-but now have the opportunity to meet the artist and hear the stories behind the famous images.
I have been photographing people, well known and unknown, for over 30 years. My primary interest has been to discover and unveil the uniqueness that makes each person a unique being. I find that when I successfully photograph a person the image we create is quite amazing. The people I’ve had the pleasure of photographing are truly beautiful, even when our culture may say that they aren’t, and this becomes fully evident in examining the finished work. Because my goal is to reveal the “soul” of each individual, I prefer that the viewer engage actively in a duologue with the person photographed. When the person sitting for a portrait speaks to me with their eyes wide open to the inquiring camera, they create the possibility for a conversation with whomever may examine the photograph in the future. I’m thrilled by the possibility of creating a space in which the subject may reveal themselves in an intimate way, with a viewer whose only access to understanding them is through the single image. Much power exists in this interchange and I am honored by the trust exhibited by both the subjects and viewers engaging in this silent interchange... Darlene Olivia McElroy Narrative Mixed Media Artist VISIT ARTIST'S WEBSITE FOLLOW DARLENE ON FACEBOOK FOLLOW DARLENE ON INSTAGRAM EMAIL My family lineage has been rooted in the Southwest for hundreds of years — Hispanic, Basque, Pueblo Indian and a hodge podge of Western European all adding flavor to the pot. I love the magic of people past and the rich spirituality, texture and color of cultures. Creating these paintings has been my way of trying to touch the souls of those that have gone before. Darlene Olivia McElroy comes from an old New Mexico family of artists, musicians and inventors. She is a mad scientist of art techniques and is continually exploring new surfaces, materials and techniques. Throughout her career McElroy has combined head and heart in her journey of creating evocative mixed-media paintings. Trained as a painter and illustrator, she has an obsession for materials, passion for dreamlike imagery, and love of new technologies, which she uses to immerse herself in richly textured surfaces, mixtures of old and new, and brilliant and subdued tones. And always, there is a face or symbol of humanity that serves as a guide into mysterious layers which challenge reason and draw upon emotions. New Mexico artists are amazing! Honored as a Local Treasure by the Albuquerque Arts Business Association, Carla obtained her Bachelor in studio art from State University of New York, Master of Science in Teaching Visual Arts from Rochester Institute of Technology, and Doctorate in Organizational Learning and Instructional Technologies from the University of New Mexico. “I approach art as an observer of the soul, enlightening the viewer about the presence, wonder, and dignity of nature and life. I want the viewer to value place and person in a space of spirit and heart and bring this illumination into their personal environments. While painting, I think about scale and how insignificant and unimportant we are in relation to the natural elements like sky, mountains, rivers, foliage, and fauna. I think about light—warmth and cool—and the play of highlight and shadow, and how nurturing our sun is in the cycle of life. This direct observation of nature and presence inspires my spectral luminescent works. My plein air and objective abstract pieces are created through a multiple layering painting process starting with brushes and then layering tiles of color and striations using pallet knives and other mark-making tools and materials. My palette and three-dimensional form come from what I see in U.S.A.’s Southwestern landscape−full spectrum colors and stellar shapes, not just greens, blues, and square angles. I just love New Mexico! It is a painter's paradise.” New Mexico artists are amazing!

Color, light, texture, and form: four elements in nature that have captivated me for years! Whether I am looking at the grandeur of the landscape, a gemstone, or ink as it is spread across a printing plate, I continually look for ways to incorporate my fascination with these phenomena in my artistic creations. Although I will pursue a single theme in a variety of mediums and styles, these threads are present, regardless of the materials I choose. My whole life has been enriched by my passion to create, as evidenced by my experimentation in a plethora of mediums that exist in the art world today. Each gives me a different voice and expression: the thread which binds them all is my love for texture, light, and this beautiful planet we are on! New Mexico artists are amazing! His art is a visual, concrete, and elemental language. He does not try to contain or narrow its translation, choosing rather to broaden its meaning and impact to the greatest possible audience. She continues to experiment with new directions in felt work, being inspired by innovators in Europe and the US. Lise's latest work is a series of new fiber art combined with silver and gold plated jewelry. Nick was first attracted to print making while hanging out at the Zeller 9 Gallery on the Fulham Road in Chelsea. After sessions at Winchester Art College studying etching, he was truly hooked. In the US at the Pacific Arts League of Palo Alto, Nick studied with Adele Seltzer (who had worked with Nathaniel Oliviera), and switched allegiance from etching to monotype printmaking. In Taos, Nick met Michael Vigil, an inspiring and generous artist and printmaker, and Nick continues to print at Michael's studio, Graphic Impressions. Recently, Nick has returned to etching and serigraphs, with thought-provoking work ranging from contemporary takes on Japanese samurai themes, to homages to icons of art and music. Her preferred style is impressionist realism, with the punctuation of personal statements with the brush, pencil or stick. In this day of instant photos and digital art, Louise finds the mark of the artist to be more important than ever. Therefore, each of her creations celebrates rather than hides obvious brush and pencil strokes. The immediacy of the visible artist’s touch is as important to her as is the style. She has long sought to capture “the spirit of place” in her artwork, finding inspiration from not only her current surroundings but also from the fragmented memories of her youth in Europe. From the age of four, Starcevic knew she wanted to be an artist. She earned a BFA in Ceramics and Studio Art and an MFA in Mixed Media from the Academy of Applied Arts University in Belgrade and completed postgraduate work in printmaking at the University of New Mexico. Her paintings are rich in color, verve, and motion, whether interpreting raw landscapes, radiant light, or the brilliant colors of the New Mexico sky. Her current work, inspired by southwestern hues and views, is usually painted from memory, guided by intuition, and fueled by imagination. Ivana's work, described by one critic as “unshakably cosmopolitan, irreversibly modern, and strikingly innovative,” has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and her pieces are held in both public and private collections including the City of Albuquerque “Art in Public Spaces”. She also has permanent collections of her paintings at the high-tech Senspex building and a collection of large paintings at the NM Cancer Center. In 2022, Starcevic has been honored to be named a Local Treasure by the Albuquerque Arts Business Association. New Mexico artists are amazing! Rene Sepulveda Sculptured Abstract Works Resident Artist, 2nd Life Gallery, Roadrunner Emporium, Alamogordo, New Mexico Artist Rene Sepulveda’s carefully constructed sculptures and art installations are abstract interpretative works that rely heavily on the influence of nature for texture and symmetry, for rural to urban spaces. "I believe that the artistry of Cholla Art, Tree Trunk Art, Root Art or Lava Rock and Metal works are unique and not well understood, in that most homeowners or business owners don’t have the knowledge of the beauty these pieces can bring to their environment. Most people have not been exposed to these kinds of sculptured works, very few artists create art with these mediums as a canvas. Most people don’t know the sense of Zen or harmony that is created by including these pieces into the home, office, or business environment." Rene Sepulveda former NCAA Award winning Track and Field Coach, California/New Mexico regionally renown Rehabilitative Coach turned artist who creates sculptured abstract works. One art critic recently said of his works that they are “incisive meditations of colorishis designs, shapes and composition complimenting natures wonders using lava rocks, tree roots, tree trunks, bark, cholla desert cactus as components of his canvas.” New Mexico artists are amazing!
